In this episode of Physician Empowerment, Dr. Wing Lim welcomes Calgary family physician and medical entrepreneur Dr. Taofik Adekunle Adedeji to discuss strategic thinking, medical clinic ownership, and business growth. In a role reversal, Dr. Adedeji interviews Dr. Lim about the decisions that shaped Synergy Wellness Centre in Sherwood Park, Alberta. Dr. Lim shares the financial and operational challenges of merging five medical practices into one clinic and explains how applying the Hedgehog Concept from Jim Collins’ book Good to Great helped transform the clinic's business strategy.
Dr. Lim explains the three principles of the Hedgehog Concept: identifying what you are passionate about, determining what you can be best at, and understanding what drives your economic engine. By focusing on quality, timely longitudinal patient care and recognizing physicians as the clinic's primary business customers, Synergy changed its approach to physician recruitment, practice management, and professional development. Dr. Lim describes how this strategy helped the clinic grow from 12 to 36 physicians over approximately five years, eventually reaching a peak of 50 physicians. Dr. Adedeji and Dr. Lim also discuss the importance of choosing the right business partners, aligning team members with their strengths, and taking risks to pursue professional goals. Their conversation offers Canadian physicians insights into medical entrepreneurship, clinic management, strategic planning, and developing a sustainable medical practice.
